Quick Answer

What is The Naked Kiss about?

The Naked Kiss is a 1964 American crime drama film directed by Samuel Fuller about a former prostitute seeking a new life in a small town, only to find her past and a shocking discovery threaten her chance at happiness.

Programmer's Pick

Samuel Fuller doesn’t do subtle, and The Naked Kiss is a prime example: a pulp melodrama that fearlessly exposes the rot beneath polite society. Between Kelly’s shaved head and the town’s sanctimonious menfolk, this is a noir that never flinches—or lets its heroine off easy.

Overview

Kelly, a former prostitute fleeing her past and a vengeful pimp, arrives in the seemingly quiet town of Grantville. After a tense encounter with the local police captain, who tries to push her out, she defies expectations by leaving her old ways behind. Kelly finds honest work as a nurse in a hospital for disabled children and tries to build a new life, even as the skeptical police captain continues to hound her. Romance blooms with J.L. Grant, a charming member of the town’s founding family, but Kelly’s path to happiness is complicated by the town’s judgments and a shocking event that tests her mental resolve. The film explores themes of morality, social stigma, and the struggle for redemption in an unforgiving world.
