Programmer's Pick

Only in the early seventies could a shockumentary claim to be both manifesto and amusement park ride. Sex Freedom in Germany serves up white coater antics, candid witness testimony, and a healthy dose of German self-liberation, all before Deep Throat rewrote the rules.

Overview

Sex Freedom in Germany, originally titled Wunderland der Liebe - Der große deutsche Sexreport, is a 1970 German 'sexumentary' that peeks behind the curtain of changing attitudes toward sexuality in its era. Framed as an explicit manifesto on German sex culture, the film blends candid interviews with key figures and scenes intended to both amuse and provoke. With its tongue-in-cheek approach, the documentary positions itself as both an entertaining and informative look at the so-called self-liberation of love. Released at the tail end of the soft-core exploitation boom, it stands as a playful yet pointed entry in the mondo and shockumentary tradition, mixing social commentary with a distinctly cheeky tone.
