Overview

When Elena Bardi, a teacher from Sondrio, relocates to a Sicilian town, her hopes for a new start are quickly dashed. On her arrival, she is harassed by a man on the bus, only to learn the next morning that he has been executed. Finding lodging with the enigmatic lawyer Bellocampo, Elena soon discovers that the town is riddled with secrets and unspoken rules. Her non-conformist approach puts her at odds with her colleagues, leaving her isolated except for a cautious relationship with Professor Belcore. As she faces the challenges of school evasion and the town’s resistance to change, Elena is drawn deeper into a web of intrigue, where power and silence hold sway.
Ending Explained Spoilers — click to reveal

Elena realizes she has been used by Bellocampo and the town's power brokers, confronts the truth about the city’s corruption, and ultimately decides to leave, though she does not take the bus on the morning of her departure.

The ending underscores Elena’s disillusionment with the town and its moral compromises. Her choice not to board the bus suggests a final act of agency or unresolved business, leaving her future open but marking her refusal to be a pawn any longer. The film lands with a note of ambiguity, emphasizing the cost of challenging entrenched power and the isolating effect of non-conformity.
