Programmer's Pick

Only in the 1940s could glandular research, circus melodrama, and a sultry Ape Woman collide so spectacularly. John Carradine brings the mad science, Acquanetta brings the animal magnetism, and the circus cats just try to stay out of the way.

Overview

Fred Mason, an animal trainer, returns from safari with a collection of wild animals for the Whipple Circus, including Cheela, a remarkably affectionate gorilla. Mason reunites with his fiancée, Beth, who is concerned about her sister Dorothy’s mysterious health issues and suggests consulting Dr. Sigmund Walters, a respected endocrinologist. Dorothy is already under Walters’ care at Crestview Sanatorium. When Walters visits the circus winter quarters, he becomes intensely interested in Cheela, setting the stage for a collision of animal instinct and scientific ambition. The film quickly establishes a tense atmosphere where the boundaries between human and beast—and between ethical science and obsession—are dangerously thin.
