Programmer's Pick

Boris Karloff trades his monster makeup for a pince-nez, serving classic B-movie detective realness with a whiff of poison gas and a generous side of espionage. San Francisco’s Chinatown is less a setting than a moody playground for murder, coded telegrams, and a parade of suspects.

Overview

When chemical magnate Simon Dayton fears for his life in 1930s San Francisco, he turns to the enigmatic Mr. Wong for protection. But before Wong can intervene, Dayton is found dead in his locked office—apparently alone and with no visible wounds. While police chalk it up to a heart attack, Wong’s sharp eye uncovers a shattered glass sphere containing deadly poison gas, opening a case crawling with intrigue. Suspects range from business partners with much to gain, to sinister foreign agents intent on halting the shipment of a lethal chemical formula. Amid Chinatown backdrops, gunfire, and deception, Mr. Wong tracks a killer whose motives are as murky as the San Francisco fog.
