What is Doom Asylum about?

Doom Asylum is a 1988 American comedy-horror film directed by Richard Friedman about a disfigured lawyer who comes back to life after a car accident and turns an abandoned asylum into his personal killing ground.

Programmer's Pick

Doom Asylum gleefully skewers the slasher formula with a blend of gory set pieces and campy humor, tossing in rock musicians, nerds, and more than one wink at the audience. Come for the mortuary tools, stay for the water-balloon warfare and Metallica references.

Overview

In Doom Asylum, a tragic car accident in 1977 leaves attorney Mitch Hansen disfigured and presumed dead—until he revives during his own autopsy, setting the stage for a decade of carnage. Ten years later, a group of friends, including the daughter of Hansen’s late fiancée, and a raucous rock band converge on the abandoned asylum, oblivious to the lurking danger within. As music blares and water balloons fly, the group's day of sunbathing and teenage antics gradually gives way to terror, thanks to the presence of the vengeful, half-mad Hansen. This is a horror-comedy blend where slasher conventions meet tongue-in-cheek mayhem and irreverent teen energy.
