Help is at hand in the form of young Captain Cummings, a local temperance league leader.

Quick Answer

What is She Done Him Wrong about?

She Done Him Wrong is a 1933 American comedy-drama directed by Lowell Sherman about Lady Lou, a charismatic saloon singer in 1890s New York, who navigates a web of admirers and criminal intrigue in her Bowery barroom.

Programmer's Pick

Mae West’s Lady Lou is the platinum standard for saloon sirens—her wit is as sharp as her diamonds are big. With Cary Grant in the wings and a barroom packed with crooks, this pre-Code romp is as saucy as its heroine. Manhattan never looked so mischievous.

Overview

Set in the bustling Bowery of 1890s New York, She Done Him Wrong follows Lady Lou, a bold and glamorous singer favored with diamonds by her boss, Gus Jordan. Lou's allure has drawn a staggering number of suitors, but beneath the sparkle, criminal currents swirl. While Lou charms her way through the city's nightlife, Gus secretly finances her luxuries through illicit dealings—prostitution and counterfeiting—using his network of entertainer-assistants. As rival Dan Flynn drops warnings about Gus’s dark side, Lou’s world teeters between high society sparkle and underworld danger. The arrival of Captain Cummings, a temperance league leader, hints at both hope and trouble for Lou’s saloon-centered orbit.
