Before Coppola made mobsters immortal, he gave us Manhattan’s most neurotic mama’s boy (and a truly menacing rooster).

Programmer's Pick

Francis Ford Coppola's pre-Godfather foray is a coming-of-age comedy with a neurotic Manhattan twist: overbearing parents, a pet rooster, and a parade of peculiar characters. It’s a love letter to awkward youth and the city that never sleeps—unless your mother’s watching.

Overview

Nineteen-year-old Bernard Chanticleer, still coddled by his overbearing mother and scrutinized by his stern father, takes his first shaky steps toward independence when his father decides it's time for him to move into his own Manhattan apartment. Bernard, nicknamed "Big Boy," finds himself under the watchful eye of the nosy Miss Nora Thing in a quirky rooming house—complete with a fierce pet rooster. As Bernard tries to adjust to city life, parental meddling doesn't stop, with his mother arranging for reports on any female visitors and even sending locks of her hair to his new address. Working as a library assistant and living under constant observation, Bernard’s coming-of-age journey is anything but typical.
Ending Explained Spoilers — click to reveal

Bernard ultimately realizes his infatuation with Barbara is fruitless and finds true love with the steadfast Amy.

The film resolves Bernard’s coming-of-age story by steering him away from the allure of unattainable beauty and toward a genuine connection with someone who truly cares for him. This conclusion underscores the theme of maturity, as Bernard learns to look past superficial desires and appreciate authentic affection. It’s a classic pivot from fantasy to reality, marking his first real step into adulthood.

Why Cult

Overbearing Parents

Bernard’s mother and father micro-manage his every move, from mailing locks of hair to orchestrating his living situation.

Quirky Rooming House

The Manhattan apartment comes complete with a prudish landlady and her late brother's aggressive pet rooster on the top floor.

Manhattan 1960s Vibe

The film captures the offbeat charm and eccentricities of 1960s New York City, from discotheques to automat lunches.

Awkward Romance

Bernard’s misadventures in love pit him between a cold-hearted beauty and a loyal classmate, with plenty of comic detours.
