Quick Answer

What is Breakout about?

Breakout is a 1975 American action-adventure thriller directed by Tom Gries about a Texas bush pilot hired to rescue a wrongly imprisoned man from a Mexican jail.

Programmer's Pick

Charles Bronson brings his signature grit to the skies, while the plot serves up a Tex-Mex escape caper spiked with helicopters, double-crosses, and a bush pilot’s can-do spirit. If you like your rescues with both horsepower and horsepower (courtesy of a light aircraft and a Bronson mustache), you're in the right hangar.

Overview

Breakout launches into the world of cross-border intrigue when Harris Wagner, fearing his grandson Jay's interference in shady business dealings, orchestrates Jay's wrongful imprisonment in Mexico via a CIA frame-up. Jay's wife, Ann, refuses to stand by and enlists the help of Nick Colton, a Texas bush pilot with a knack for trouble, and his partner Hawk Hawkins. The plan? An audacious aerial rescue from a fortified Mexican prison, complete with failed attempts, quick improvisations, and a crash course in helicopter piloting. With corrupt officials and dangerous distractions at every turn, Breakout blends action, adventure, and a dash of comedic misdirection in a sun-baked, high-stakes setting.
