Slam Dance is a 1987 United Kingdom and United States mystery thriller film directed by Wayne Wang about a married cartoonist who becomes entangled in a political sex scandal and murder investigation after his lover is found dead.

Programmer's Pick

When slam dancing is the least dangerous thing in your night, you know you’re deep in neo-noir territory. Wayne Wang serves up a seedy cocktail of erotic intrigue, cartoonist dilemmas, and backstabbing LA weirdos—plus, Harry Dean Stanton as the rare trustworthy cop. It’s the kind of movie where everyone has something to hide, except maybe the guy in his underwear.

Overview

In Slam Dance, C.C. Drood is a married cartoonist whose life unravels after his lover, Yolanda Caldwell—a call girl—turns up murdered. Pulled into the murky aftermath of a political sex scandal, Drood quickly becomes the prime suspect, pursued not only by the police but also by a hit man hired to eliminate him. The world he’s thrust into is one of underground clubs where slam dancing reigns and alliances are as unstable as his alibi. As Drood navigates betrayals from all sides, including a corrupt cop intent on framing him, he’s forced to question who he can trust and how far the web of deceit truly stretches. The film delivers a moody, noir-inflected thriller set against the gritty backdrop of 1980s excess.
