Quick Answer

What is Naked about?

Naked is a 1993 United Kingdom comedy-drama film directed by Mike Leigh about an unemployed Brit who vents his rage on unsuspecting strangers during a nocturnal odyssey through London.

Programmer's Pick

Mike Leigh strips the urban drama bare—no sentimentality, just raw nerves and caustic wit. David Thewlis’s Johnny tears through London like a philosophical wrecking ball, turning every encounter into a battle of intellect and ego. Bring your thickest skin; Naked doesn’t apologize.

Overview

Naked follows Johnny, a sharp-tongued and troubled drifter, who flees Manchester after a fraught encounter and washes up in the less-than-glamorous quarters of East London. He seeks shelter with Louise, an ex-girlfriend, who reluctantly hosts him in an apartment she shares with Sophie and the absent Sandra. While Johnny is quick to seduce Sophie, his presence is hardly a balm—he treats Louise with icy detachment and soon tires of Sophie’s company. The film sets up a stinging portrait of urban alienation and psychological unraveling, as Johnny’s restless wandering and abrasive encounters hint at the chaos he brings wherever he goes. Mike Leigh’s film is a potent mix of dark comedy and existential drama, stripped of sentimentality.
