Rabid Grannies is a 1988 Belgian-French-Dutch comedy horror film directed by Emmanuel Kervyn about a family birthday party gone wrong when a sinister gift turns two elderly sisters into cannibalistic demons.

Programmer's Pick

Rabid Grannies serves up a devilish blend of inheritance squabbles, demonic transformations, and gleefully over-the-top gore. If you ever wondered what happens when greedy relatives and supernatural party favors mix, here’s your unwholesome answer. Belgian splatter comedy doesn’t get much more unhinged than this.

Overview

In 1980s West Flanders, two elderly sisters gather their extended family for a birthday dinner party that’s more about inheritance than affection. Their nieces and nephews show up with polite faces and greedy intentions, eager for the sisters to pass on both cake and fortune. One black sheep nephew, exiled for his devil-worshipping past, is pointedly not invited. But his absence doesn’t stop him from sending a mysterious birthday gift, and when the sisters open it, the party takes a turn for the bizarre. What begins as a tense, satirical family gathering quickly unravels into a splatter-laced spectacle, setting the stage for a horror-comedy where the guest list is the least of anyone’s worries.
