Mrs. Figby’s idea of team-building clearly wasn’t in the HR handbook.

Programmer's Pick

If your idea of a business retreat involves more nudity than networking, Babes in the Woods delivers. Between a hair-raising airplane tour and a resort owner with a flair for 'respectable' chaos, this 1962 comedy is pure vintage mischief. Bonus points for the inventive ways these ladies dodge both clothing and responsibility.

Synopsis

The late J. Wellington Figby narrates the tale of his widow, Martha, as she attempts to rescue their resort from financial difficulties; she renames the resort "Mrs. Figby's Pine Tree Resort and Planned Vacations for Respectable Busy Business Girls." On their way to the camp, three young women, Mrs. Figby's first guests, refresh themselves with a nude dip at Hidden Falls.

They decide to hitchhike when their jeep fails to start. They remove their clothes and hitchhike in the nude, but the sight of Mrs. Figby approaching in her truck sends them scurrying into the bushes to dress. Mrs. Figby treats her guests to a hair-raising airplane tour of the camp. After dinner the women attempt to teach Mrs. Figby to dance the Twist; later they retire to their cabin where Mrs. Figby finds them assuming poses of strippers and pin-up models.

Two of the women join their hostess for a fishing trip. While Mrs. Figby wrestles with her elaborate equipment out on the lake, the third woman, following the advice of the incorporeal Figby, remains on the dock and lands a pile of fish with only a piece of string and a bent hairpin.

Why Cult

Nude Hitchhiking High Jinks

When their jeep dies, the three guests go full birthday suit to flag down a ride—until Mrs. Figby nearly catches them in the act.

Hair-Raising Airplane Tour

Mrs. Figby doesn’t just serve dinner—she treats her guests to an unforgettable (and possibly terrifying) flight over the camp.

Resort for Busy Business Girls

The film’s central setting is a resort hilariously rebranded to attract 'respectable busy business girls,' with results that are anything but buttoned-up.

Narrative from Beyond

J. Wellington Figby may be late, but he’s not silent—his posthumous narration sets the tone for the film’s quirky escapades.
