A baby sitter who is watching over a prank-happy child on Halloween night learns that the boy’s deranged father has escaped from an asylum.

Quick Answer

What is Trick or Treats about?

Trick or Treats is a 1982 American horror film directed by Gary Graver about a babysitter who faces terror on Halloween night when the boy’s deranged father escapes from an asylum.

Programmer's Pick

Only in the early ’80s could a low-budget slasher pit a prank-loving kid, a harried babysitter, and a vengeful escaped lunatic against each other—all on Halloween night. Trick or Treats takes the babysitter-in-peril formula and throws in fake guillotines, Vegas magicians, and enough smoke bombs to keep everyone guessing. This one’s strictly for those who prefer their scares with a side of z-grade absurdity.

Overview

Malcolm O'Keefe’s life is upended when he is forcibly committed to a mental asylum by his wife Joan. Years later, as Joan remarries and heads to Las Vegas with her new husband, their young son Christopher is left in the care of Linda, an unsuspecting babysitter. On Halloween night, Linda’s evening is anything but ordinary as Christopher, a master of practical jokes, subjects her to a barrage of tricks involving fake guillotines, smoke bombs, and more. Meanwhile, Malcolm, plotting his escape after years in the asylum, becomes a looming presence. With the night growing stranger and the pranks escalating, the stage is set for a tense and bizarre holiday babysitting gig that blurs the line between harmless fun and genuine danger.
