Quick Answer

What is Diamond Stud about?

Diamond Stud is a 1970 American drama and romance film directed by Greg Corarito about a flamboyant tycoon who tests his steel railroad cars and navigates love, rivalry, and excess at the dawn of the 20th century.

Programmer's Pick

Diamond Stud serves up a headstrong antihero with a cigar in one hand and a scandal in the other, mixing industrial bravado with softcore shenanigans. Only an X-rated railroad tycoon could make steel cars—and love affairs—this entertaining.

Overview

Diamond Stud introduces us to Diamond Jim, a brash entrepreneur with a flair for showmanship and a taste for the finer—and racier—things in life. Set against the backdrop of early 1900s America, the film follows Jim's daring proposal to replace wooden railroad cars with steel, staking his reputation (and life) on a risky demonstration. Along the way, his magnetic personality draws in a beautiful love interest, Sarah, while his personal and professional circles are filled with colorful figures: a villainous brother, a high-society best friend, and a cast of gamblers, singers, and bar girls. Expect a heady mix of romance, risk, and racy escapades, all framed by the looming promise of progress and the temptations of wealth.

Why Cult

Steel vs Wooden Railcars

The film's central dare: Diamond Jim bets his life on the safety of steel railroad cars, riding them across a treacherous wooden tressel.

Turn-of-the-Century Vice

Expect gambling, smuggling, catfights, and lavish parties, all steeped in the decadence of early 1900s America.

Sexploitation Extravaganza

With its X rating, erotic entanglements, and plenty of female nudity, this film leans into its sexploitation roots.

Based on True Events

Inspired by the real-life exploits of a flamboyant tycoon, adding a (loosely interpreted) historical edge to all the debauchery.
