The Minotaur, the Wild Beast of Crete is a 1960 Italian action-adventure fantasy film directed by Silvio Amadio and Alberto De Martino about twin sisters, royal intrigue, and the monstrous Minotaur lurking beneath Crete.

Programmer's Pick

Peplum spectacle meets Greek tragedy with a double-dose of sisterly scheming and a beast that makes palace intrigue look tame. If labyrinths, loincloths, and a classic monster on the prowl are your thing, this Italian import checks all the mythic boxes.

Overview

On the island of Crete, terror reigns as the monstrous Minotaur demands maiden sacrifices, its labyrinthine prison lying beneath the royal palace. The beast is worshipped as a god, and the ruling family is haunted by a secret: the dying Queen Pasiphaë reveals her daughter, Princess Phaedra, has a hidden twin, Ariadne, raised in obscurity to escape the Minotaur’s deadly fate. As the queen’s final wish is to reunite her daughters, King Minos consents, but not everyone welcomes this revelation. Phaedra, driven by ambition and scheming for power, sets her sights on eliminating the twin she never knew—a move that threatens to upend the delicate balance of the palace and the fate of Crete itself. Ancient politics, sibling rivalry, and mythic peril combine for a sword-and-sandals spectacle.
