Quick Answer

What is Nature's Playmates about?

Nature's Playmates is a 1962 American drama-romance film directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis about a detective and his assistant searching nudist camps for a missing husband.

Programmer's Pick

Only in the early '60s would a detective story moonlight as a nudie cutie, with more focus on sunbathing than sleuthing. Herschell Gordon Lewis swaps blood for bare skin, and as it turns out, it’s the tattoo—not the trench coat—that cracks the case.

Overview

When Chicago private eye Russell Harper and his assistant, Diana, are hired to track down a missing husband, the trail leads from city streets to sun-soaked nudist camps in Miami. Their client, Mrs. Sandra Elliott, believes her estranged husband—with a tattoo as his only distinguishing feature—can be found among Florida's naturists. Despite Diana’s initial discomfort with the nudist lifestyle, both investigators soon find themselves mingling with campers, participating in a Twist contest, and navigating a sea of liberated attitudes. What begins as a straightforward missing persons case swiftly becomes a cheeky exploration of identity, acceptance, and unexpected connections beneath the Florida sun.
