Hot Enough for June is a 1964 British adventure comedy romance directed by Ralph Thomas about an unemployed writer unwittingly recruited as an espionage courier behind the Iron Curtain.

Programmer's Pick

Dirk Bogarde stumbles and charms his way through a spy game where the code names are as subtle as the jokes. It's a Cold War send-up that winks at spy tropes while keeping its tongue firmly in cheek, thanks to a clueless protagonist and a parade of double agents.

Overview

Hot Enough for June opens in the shadowy world of Cold War intrigue, immediately poking fun at the genre's conventions. When a government clerk files away a deceased agent's effects under a drawer marked 007, it's clear the film is as much a parody as a spy caper. Into this setup walks Nicholas Whistler, an out-of-work writer who, thanks to his Czech language skills, is offered a suspiciously lucrative 'executive' job at a glass company. Sent to Prague under the flimsiest of pretenses, Whistler is given only a cryptic code phrase—"Hot Enough for June"—and little idea of the real stakes at play. With coded messages, mysterious contacts, and a beautiful guide, the film sets up a playful, tongue-in-cheek espionage adventure.
