Programmer's Pick

Comedy and horror tiptoe hand in hand through Blackshaw Towers, where a will reading quickly devolves into a madcap murder mystery. Add in Kenneth Connor’s nervous bookworm and Sid James’s streetwise sidekick, and you’ve got a British genre cocktail that’s as dry as the Yorkshire moors.

Overview

Ernest Broughton, a nervous man with a penchant for pulp horror novels, is summoned—along with his flatmate Syd Butler and a host of oddball relatives—to Blackshaw Towers, a gloomy country mansion set on the Yorkshire moors. They're all there for the reading of his Uncle Gabriel's will, but the eccentric company soon realizes this won’t be a simple family reunion. The mansion’s cast includes an alcoholic cousin, a deranged pianist, a nagging sister, a senile aunt, and a beautiful nurse. As night falls, the atmosphere thickens with suspicion and anxiety. With its blend of macabre mystery and comedy, the film sets the stage for a night where imagination and danger collide.

Why This Matters

This 1961 comedy-horror blends British talent and is loosely adapted from Frank King's 1928 novel The Ghoul, with a previous film version made in 1933. It gained later cultural resonance through its central role in Jonathan Coe's 1994 satirical novel of the same name.
