Programmer's Pick

Detectives with scars, sex clinics filled with secrets, and shadowy government agendas—this is Mike Hammer’s playground. The film serves neo-noir attitude with a psychotronic garnish, never shying from its R-rated pleasures or Cold War paranoia.

Overview

In I, the Jury, detective Mike Hammer refuses to let police warnings keep him from investigating the murder of his estranged friend Jack Williams, a fellow detective who lost his left arm in Vietnam. Williams' widow reveals they were both involved with a glamorous sex therapy clinic run by Dr. Charlotte Bennett. As Hammer probes deeper, he finds not just a bugging device in the doctor's office, but connections to high-level intrigue. With help from his secretary Velda, clues involving gasoline receipts and a mysterious summer camp suggest there’s more to the case than meets the eye. The film weaves a neo-noir milieu of deception, government conspiracy, and moral ambiguity, as Hammer treads dangerous ground through Manhattan’s underbelly.

Why This Matters

This adaptation of Mickey Spillane's detective novel is notable for its troubled production, with Larry Cohen being replaced by Richard T. Heffron after just one week due to budget issues, and for revisiting a story previously filmed in 3D in 1953.
