Programmer's Pick

You want Martians? You get Martians—just not in the way you’d expect. Instead of bug-eyed monsters, this psychotronic gem serves up existential dread and doubles sneaking through the shrubbery. If you like your alien invasions with a hefty dose of domestic unease, this one’s got your number.

Overview

NASA’s Mars rover mission ends in disaster when a mysterious energy surge destroys the probe moments after landing. At the same moment, Dr. Dave Fielding, the mission’s lead scientist, feels a strange sense of detachment—then soon finds himself and his family vacationing at his wife’s family’s lavish California mansion. As Dave tries to reconnect with his estranged wife and children, odd occurrences begin to mount: body doubles, unexplained feelings, and a creeping sense that their reality is being subtly hijacked. Set against a backdrop of Cold War anxieties and family tensions, this low-budget sci-fi entry leverages its doppelgänger premise for maximum paranoia, asking how well we ever really know those closest to us.
