Programmer's Pick

If you like your street fights with a side of rock anthems and your love triangles with motor oil, Streets of Fire delivers. Walter Hill's vision of a retro-future city is all sledgehammer showdowns, leather-clad gangs, and neon angst. Diane Lane and Michael Paré smolder beneath the city lights—just don't expect anyone to play nice.

Overview

In a stylized city district called Richmond—set in a near-future that echoes the 1950s—rock singer Ellen Aim returns home for a concert, only to be abducted by the fearsome biker gang known as the Bombers. Her kidnapping is witnessed by Reva Cody, who urgently summons her brother Tom, an ex-soldier and Ellen's former flame. Initially reluctant, Tom soon finds himself drawn back into the violent underbelly of his hometown. With the help of a tough mechanic named McCoy, Tom navigates greaser gangs, smoky taverns, and rumbling motorcycles as he considers a daring rescue. The film fuses hard-edged action, neon-drenched romance, and crime-thriller grit, all set to a pounding rock 'n' roll backdrop.

Why This Matters

Intended as the first part of a trilogy that was never completed due to its poor box office performance, this film blends 1950s and 1980s cultural elements and later inspired an unofficial sequel in 2008 featuring returning cast members Michael Paré and Deborah Van Valkenburgh.
