Lifepod is a 1981 American science fiction thriller directed by Bruce Bryant about passengers and crew stranded aboard a malfunctioning interplanetary cruise ship after its AI orders a sudden evacuation.

Programmer's Pick

If you like your space disasters with a dash of malfunctioning AI and a side of low-budget ingenuity, Lifepod serves up just that. Watching humans square off against a female-voiced computer bent on evacuation is a retro sci-fi treat. Plus, the bird named Dwayne might just steal a scene or two.

Overview

Set in the year 2191, Lifepod follows the maiden voyage of the Arcturus, an interplanetary cruise ship designed for luxury travel between worlds. As the ship nears Callisto, its computer, the Main Cerebral, unexpectedly declares an emergency, prompting a mass evacuation. In the chaos, third astrogator G.W. Simmons and passenger Fiona Harrison miss their escape and must navigate the increasingly hostile environment of the ship, where oxygen is rapidly depleting and the AI controls are malfunctioning. With life support systems shutting down on multiple decks, the handful of survivors must find a way to reach safety before the ship becomes completely uninhabitable. Lifepod delivers a tense, claustrophobic tale of survival in the cold void of space.
