Programmer's Pick

Dripping with gothic atmosphere and family melodrama, House of Dark Shadows brings soap opera sensibility to the vampire mythos. Dan Curtis turns a stately Maine estate into a hunting ground for Jonathan Frid’s predatory, lovesick Barnabas. It’s daylight horror with a side of supernatural dysfunction.

Overview

House of Dark Shadows sets its gloomy tone at the Collinwood estate in Maine, where handyman Willie Loomis stumbles upon a long-sealed family secret: the coffin of Barnabas Collins, a vampire dormant for 175 years. Once freed, Barnabas wastes little time before unleashing his supernatural power, attacking Daphne Budd and ensnaring Willie as his unwilling servant. Masquerading as a distant cousin from England, he inserts himself into the Collins household, charming some family members while arousing suspicion in others. The film weaves gothic horror with familial intrigue as the enigmatic Barnabas pursues Maggie Evans, who uncannily resembles his lost love. As curiosity and unease build among the residents, the true nature of their new guest remains dangerously concealed.
