Quick Answer

What is Whirlpool about?

Whirlpool is a 1970 Denmark/United Kingdom drama, horror, mystery, and crime film directed by José Ramón Larraz about a young model who becomes entangled in a disturbing web of sex, voyeurism, and violence at the home of a reclusive photographer and her enigmatic companion.

Programmer's Pick

If you like your giallo with a side of exploitation and a camera lens that’s as predatory as its characters, Whirlpool is ready to develop in your darkroom. Larraz serves up rural British sleaze tinted with continental malaise, where even a photo session in the woods isn’t safe from leering eyes.

Overview

In the English countryside outside London, Sarah, a middle-aged photographer, shares her home with Theo, a younger man she calls her nephew. Their secluded existence is interrupted when Sarah invites Tulia, a young fashion model, to pose for Theo. A photo shoot in the woods takes a sinister turn when Tulia is spied upon by a cloaked figure, igniting her unease. Over drinks and a game of cards, Tulia learns her friend Rhonda also felt unsettled during her own stay at Sarah's, particularly by the nearby lake. As Tulia grows more anxious, the boundaries between modeling, voyeurism, and personal intimacy begin to blur, hinting at unspoken tensions and the dark allure lurking beneath the house’s surface.
