Quick Answer

What is Sweet Sugar about?

Sweet Sugar is a 1972 American action-drama film directed by Michel Levesque about a woman forced to work on a cruel sugar-cane plantation after being framed on a drug charge.

Programmer's Pick

Sweet Sugar doesn't just stir the exploitation pot; it dumps in a bag of sugar and watches it burn. Between Dr. John's mad-scientist antics and guards who make the fields as dangerous as the lab, this is women-in-prison cinema with its machete out and its shirt off.

Overview

When Sugar Bowman is framed on a trumped-up drug charge, she chooses two years of forced labor on a sugar-cane plantation over jail. Upon arrival, she and fellow inmate Simone face the brutality of guard Burgos and the sadistic oversight of Dr. John, the plantation's owner. The inmates endure exhausting days cutting cane and are subjected to Dr. John's unethical medical experiments. Violence, exploitation, and power games define daily survival for Sugar and her companions, who must navigate both the treacherous staff and the harsh environment. This is a women-in-prison tale that pulls no punches, steeped in exploitation and set against a backdrop of sweat, machetes, and desperation.
