Quick Answer

What is What! No Beer? about?

What! No Beer? is a 1933 American comedy film directed by Edward Sedgwick about a barber and a taxidermist who try to get rich by brewing beer as Prohibition nears its end.

Programmer's Pick

Keaton and Durante mix slapstick with suds in a booze-soaked romp through the last days of Prohibition. The jokes are as fizzy as the botched beer bottles, and the brewery chaos is pure pre-Code pandemonium.

Overview

Set during an election year with the repeal of Prohibition looming, What! No Beer? follows the bumbling taxidermist Elmer J. Butts, played by Buster Keaton, who finds himself swept into a scheme to cash in on the thirst of a newly 'wet' public. Persuaded by his friend Jimmy Potts, a barber with a penchant for pro-booze propaganda, Elmer invests his hidden savings into a rundown brewery. Their entrepreneurial adventure quickly spirals into slapstick mayhem, with mishaps at the polls, brewing disasters, and run-ins with both law enforcement and local bootleggers. This is a fast-paced comedy that lampoons the chaos and opportunism of the Prohibition era, starring two of comedy’s most distinctive personalities.
