Programmer's Pick

Helen Mirren before her Dame days, tangled up in nightclub noir and British grit—Hussy isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty. Come for the backstage drama, stay for the sharp, lived-in performances and an unvarnished look at love on the margins.

Overview

Set in the seamy nightlife of London, Hussy follows Beaty, a prostitute working at a cabaret, and Emory, a sound and lighting technician, as they navigate a burgeoning love affair complicated by Beaty's profession and Emory's shadowy past. As they attempt to build something genuine, issues of jealousy, secrets, and strained loyalties intrude on their relationship. Beaty is not just managing Emory’s discomfort with her job, but also juggling life as a single mother with shared custody of her son. When figures from both their pasts—each with their own motives and baggage—enter the scene, their fragile connection is pressured further. The film is a gritty portrait of romance under stress in a world of vice, crime, and yearning for escape.
