Programmer's Pick

Boris Karloff dons the Frankenstein mantle once more, this time as an embittered Baron whose new monster is only half as terrifying as the film crew invading his castle. Atomic age science, meta-movie shenanigans, and a dash of Grand Guignol make this a curio for fans of both classic monsters and self-referential chills.

Overview

In a postwar world haunted by past atrocities, the last surviving Frankenstein, Baron Victor von Frankenstein, bears the scars of Nazi torture but remains fixated on his family's notorious legacy. Desperate for funds to continue his ancestor’s notorious experiments, the aging Baron strikes a deal with a television crew, inviting them to his ancestral castle to film a horror movie about the Frankenstein mythos itself. While the crew sets up shop amid the castle's eerie corridors, the Baron secretly resumes his quest to conquer death, believing his time is running out. The film weaves together the self-aware trappings of a movie-within-a-movie with classic mad scientist intrigue, setting the stage for a collision between cinematic artifice and real-life monstrosity, all under the looming shadow of atomic age anxieties.
