Quick Answer

Creature from the Haunted Sea is a 1961 Puerto Rican-American comedy horror film directed by Roger Corman about a crook who plans to murder his crew and blame their deaths on a mythical sea creature—unaware that the monster actually exists.

Programmer's Pick

Roger Corman delivers a send-up of both gangster flicks and monster movies, never missing a chance for a wink or a groan-worthy gag. Where else do you get a toilet plunger masquerading as monster evidence, and a hero too smitten to notice the plot unraveling around him?

Overview

Set against the backdrop of the Cuban Revolution, Creature from the Haunted Sea follows American gambler and crook Renzo Capetto as he flees Cuba with a group of loyalists—and the nation’s treasury—plotting to stage a counterrevolution. Capetto’s crew is a motley assortment, including his tough girlfriend, her naive brother, a clueless animal-imitating oaf, and the undercover American agent Sparks Moran. Sparks, serving double duty as narrator, bumbles through the caper, distracted by his hopeless crush. Capetto’s get-rich scheme involves blaming a string of murders on a legendary sea monster, but in this satirical blend of comedy and horror, no one is as sharp as they think. The film delights in lampooning both spy antics and monster movie tropes.
