Programmer's Pick

This is classic 1950s creature-feature territory, but with a stop-motion scorpion the size of a city bus and a healthy serving of Mexican countryside mayhem. It's got volcanos, panicked villagers, and scientists out of their depth—plus a meat wagon and a canteen for good measure.

Overview

When a violent earthquake strikes Mexico, a new volcano erupts overnight, prompting geologists Dr. Hank Scott and Dr. Arturo Ramos to investigate the disaster's origins in the rural village of San Lorenzo. The devastation they encounter—including a destroyed house, a totaled police car, and a mysterious orphaned infant—hints at a danger far beyond natural disaster. Welcomed by the local priest, the scientists learn that the villagers blame a 'demon bull' for the livestock slaughter and mounting chaos. As the military arrives to provide relief, Hank and Arturo begin to suspect that something monstrous, awakened by the volcanic activity, is responsible for the destruction. The stage is set for a collision between science, superstition, and something far larger lurking below.
