The Stranger is a 1946 American crime thriller directed by Orson Welles about a Nazi war criminal hiding under a false identity in a quiet Connecticut town while being hunted by a relentless investigator.

Programmer's Pick

Orson Welles takes the noir template to postwar suburbia, staging paranoia and hidden identities among church bells and wedding vows. Edward G. Robinson brings his signature doggedness as the Nazi hunter, while the ticking clock isn’t just a metaphor—it’s a signature. If you like your small towns with shadows and secrets, this one winds tight.

Overview

In the aftermath of World War II, Mr. Wilson, an agent with the United Nations War Crimes Commission, is on the hunt for Franz Kindler, a notorious Nazi mastermind who has erased every trace of his old life. Kindler’s only distinguishing feature is his fanatical love of clocks. Hoping to flush him out, Wilson tracks Kindler’s former associate to the quiet town of Harper, Connecticut, where Kindler now lives under the identity of Charles Rankin, a prep school teacher about to marry into a prominent local family. As Wilson closes in, the stage is set for a tense battle of wits in a seemingly sleepy American town.
