Programmer's Pick

Joseph Losey’s fable doesn’t just dye its protagonist’s hair—it colors the whole small town with allegory. Come for Dean Stockwell’s earnest performance, stay for the blend of political parable and offbeat fantasy that makes this a one-of-a-kind postwar curio.

Overview

In a quiet American town, a young runaway boy named Peter Fry is discovered by the police, his head shaved and his demeanor withdrawn. Through the guidance of a psychologist, Peter recounts his journey as a war orphan, shuffled among indifferent relatives before finding comfort with the kindly Gramp, a retired actor. As Peter adjusts to school and normalcy, he and his classmates become involved in helping war orphans abroad, and Peter slowly realizes his own connection to their plight. The film unfolds as an allegorical exploration of loss, identity, and the challenges of standing out in a community that values conformity, all set against the backdrop of postwar anxieties and an emerging antiwar sentiment.
