Quick Answer

What is Swamp Girl about?

Swamp Girl is a 1971 American drama film directed by Donald A. Davis about Janeen, a girl raised in the Okefenokee Swamp, who uncovers haunting truths about her origins and forms a bond with a park ranger.

Programmer's Pick

Swamp Girl plunges headfirst into hixploitation territory, swapping city lights for shotgun standoffs and airboat chases on the Okefenokee. With a tangled past and plenty of alligator-infested atmosphere, it’s a southern-fried slice of exploitation cinema with a conscience—sort of.

Overview

Set deep in Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp near the city of Waycross, Swamp Girl follows Janeen, a resourceful young woman who has grown up isolated in the wetlands with Nat, the man she calls Pa. When Janeen assists park ranger Jim after he’s caught in a poachers’ trap, she begins to open up to the outside world. Their encounter triggers revelations about Janeen’s mysterious upbringing and the dark circumstances that led to her life in the swamp. With themes of abandonment, survival, and trust, the film weaves together elements of Southern exploitation and hixploitation drama, all against the wild, untamed backdrop of the American South.
