Quick Answer

What is Hard Candy about?

Hard Candy is a 2005 United States drama thriller directed by David Slade about a 14-year-old girl who meets a much older photographer after an online chat, setting off a tense psychological confrontation.

Programmer's Pick

Hard Candy flips the script on the online predator thriller, serving a fiercely intelligent teen protagonist who isn’t here to play victim. With a minimal cast and a relentless cat-and-mouse energy, it’s a claustrophobic chamber piece that’s as unsettling as it is smart.

Overview

Hard Candy introduces Hayley Stark, a sharp 14-year-old who connects online with Jeff Kohlver, a 32-year-old fashion photographer. After a flirtatious chat, they meet at a coffeehouse and soon move to Jeff's home, where subtle power dynamics and unease begin to build. Hayley proves to be unusually cautious about her drink, insisting on mixing it herself. As Jeff gives her a tour, the decor—photos of underage girls—raises the stakes. When Hayley asks to be photographed, the evening takes a sudden, disturbing turn as Jeff loses consciousness and awakens bound to a chair. What follows is a tense, cerebral standoff that challenges the boundaries of predator and prey.
