Programmer's Pick

A family drama with a bite, this Mexican chiller digs deep into generational dysfunction—cannibal style. Jorge Michel Grau serves up a story where keeping dinner on the table involves far more than a trip to the market.

Overview

After their father dies unexpectedly at a shopping mall, the already-struggling family at the heart of We Are What We Are finds itself in disarray. The patriarch was their only means of support, working as a watchmaker at a bustling street market. With booth rent overdue and tempers flaring, the teenage children—Alfredo, Julián, and Sabina—return home only to be shaken by their father's passing. Their mother retreats in grief, leaving the siblings to reckon with new responsibilities, including the family's disturbing rituals. Set in the gritty corners of Mexico City, the film explores how the children must adapt to survive and uphold their family's gruesome legacy.
