Programmer's Pick

You wanted activism with bite? Eli Roth serves up jungle terror, cannibal chaos, and a bitter aftertaste of irony. The only thing greener than the rainforest is the naiveté of these undergrads.

Overview

Justine, a college freshman motivated by activism, joins a student group led by Alejandro and Kara that aims to stop a petrochemical company from destroying the Amazon rainforest. With the hope of leveraging her father's connections at the United Nations, Justine adds a layer of legitimacy to the cause. Funded by Carlos, a Peru-based drug dealer, the group arrives at the construction site and orchestrates a protest, chaining themselves to bulldozers and capturing their demonstration on video for worldwide attention. Their boldness draws the attention of a private militia hired by the company, setting off a perilous sequence of events as the group’s idealism collides with the unforgiving reality of the rainforest.

Why This Matters

Eli Roth's film deliberately pays homage to the Italian cannibal horror cycle of the late 1970s and early '80s, notably referencing Cannibal Holocaust, and sparked controversy for its portrayal of indigenous peoples, drawing criticism from human rights organizations.
