Programmer's Pick

Director Richard Fleischer trades crime for caper, steering an ensemble of goofballs as they bungle through deserts and diner mishaps. Come for the chili, stay for the cash-grabbing chaos and a product placement twist that leaves the studio audience richer—maybe.

Overview

In Million Dollar Mystery, a disgruntled White House aide named Sidney Preston absconds with four million dollars of government money and makes a pit stop at a diner in the Arizona desert. While sampling the establishment's legendary chili and flirting with waitress Dotty, Sidney suffers a fatal heart attack, but not before dropping a tantalizing clue about the first million’s hiding place. The diverse and eccentric passersby—including the Briggs family, a pair of nerdy newlyweds, a trio of glamorous backup dancers, and a handful of oddball locals—decide to pursue the fortune. What follows is a chaotic hunt influenced by coded messages, television news bulletins, and escalating competition. The tone is broad, quick-witted, and gleefully farcical, packing in roadside Americana, slapstick stunts, and colorful personalities.
