Programmer's Pick

She Freak swaps the diner counter for the carnival tent, serving up exploitation with a side of ambition and plenty of snake oil. Claire Brennen's Jade isn't just running from her past — she's sprinting toward a whole new level of trouble. It’s a gritty, psychotronic riff on the perils of biting off more than you can chew.

Overview

She Freak follows Jade Cochran, a jaded waitress desperate to escape her dead-end job at a shabby diner. When a traveling carnival rolls into town, Jade seizes the opportunity for a fresh start, taking a job serving meals to the eclectic carnival crew. She quickly befriends Pat, a stripper, and becomes involved with Steve St. John, the carnival's owner and freakshow ringmaster. Seduced by the prospect of wealth and status, Jade sets her sights on marrying Steve, even as she maintains a clandestine affair with the surly ride operator, Blackie Fleming. The film simmers with anticipation and fascination for the world of carnival oddities, as Jade's ambitions draw her deeper into the sideshow's strange, exploitative milieu.
