Quick Answer

What is Boss Nigger about?

Boss Nigger is a 1975 American action-comedy Western directed by Jack Arnold about two Black bounty hunters who take over sheriff duties in a lawless, racist frontier town.

Programmer's Pick

Fred Williamson brings swagger and a steely sense of humor to a Western that refuses to play by the town's old rules. If you've ever wanted to see a Black cowboy turn a racist sheriff system on its head, this is your saddle. The mix of satire and action feels as pointed as Boss's aim.

Overview

Boss Nigger sets its sights on the Old West with a sharp twist: two Black bounty hunters, Boss and Amos, who intervene heroically when they come upon a wagon under attack. Their quick thinking not only saves a woman named Clara Mae, but also lands them in the corrupt town of San Miguel, where a letter from the mayor exposes a plot to install an outlaw as sheriff. Seizing the opportunity, Boss maneuvers his way into the vacant sheriff's post, determined to uphold his own code of justice in a town accustomed to lawlessness and racial prejudice. With wit, grit, and more than a little firepower, Boss and Amos challenge both the outlaws and the townsfolk, making it clear that the rules—and the rulers—are about to change.
