Programmer's Pick

Blue Eyes of the Broken Doll doesn’t just flirt with giallo conventions—it throws them into a blender with Spanish horror and serves up a bloody, eye-gouging cocktail. Paul Naschy’s Gilles is the perfect outsider in a household where everyone has secrets, and the film’s blend of rural gothic weirdness and sleaze keeps things stylishly off-kilter.

Overview

Gilles, an ex-con drifter, finds himself in a remote French village, seeking work and anonymity. He is picked up by Claude, a woman concealing a prosthetic hand, and soon hired as a handyman by her and her two sisters: seductive redhead Nicole and the wheelchair-bound Yvette. Each sister brings her own brand of tension to the household, with Nicole’s overt advances, Claude’s suspicion, and Yvette’s frailty under medical care. As Gilles settles into this uneasy domestic arrangement, a black-gloved killer begins targeting blue-eyed women in the area, collecting their eyes in a jar. The villagers grow restless, and suspicion swirls as the murders mount, setting the stage for a grisly giallo-tinged mystery.
Ending Explained Spoilers — click to reveal

Gilles is killed by villagers who suspect him, but the murders continue; the real killer is revealed to be the doctor, who has been harvesting eyes for his dead daughter.

The film subverts audience expectations by making Gilles, the suspicious drifter, a red herring, while the true horror lies in the doctor's obsessive grief. His compulsion to replace his daughter's eyes exposes the film’s preoccupation with loss, madness, and the futility of trying to resurrect the past. The twist lands as a bleak commentary on guilt and misdirected justice.
