Quick Answer

What is Phase IV about?

Phase IV is a 1974 United Kingdom/United States horror, science fiction, and thriller film directed by Saul Bass about two scientists who confront rapidly evolving ants with a hive mind in the Arizona desert.

Programmer's Pick

Saul Bass puts the 'creep' in creature feature, swapping atomic monsters for mathematically-minded ants. This is the rare nature horror that gives its insect antagonists as much narrative weight as its humans, and yes—those geometric towers are as unsettling as they sound.

Overview

After an unexplained cosmic event, the ants of the Arizona desert begin to evolve at a frightening pace—different species unite under a single hive mind, constructing mysterious geometric towers in the sand. As the local population flees, only a single family remains behind, soon joined by two scientists, James Lesko and Ernest Hubbs, who set up a high-tech lab in a sealed dome to observe and combat the increasingly aggressive ants. The ants prove to be formidable opponents, adapting quickly and mounting their own counterattacks. The film meticulously follows both the human and ant protagonists, immersing viewers in a tense, visually striking battle of intellect and instinct.
