The Sinister Urge is a 1960 American crime, drama, horror, and thriller film directed by Edward D. Wood Jr. about police officers investigating a series of murders linked to a pornographic film ring.

Programmer's Pick

Ed Wood Jr. turns the lens on Hollywood’s low-rent side, blending murder, pornography, and moral panic in a film that’s as campy as it is cautionary. Where else can you find a crime drama that detours through pizza parlors and ice cream joints on its way to a lecture about smut? This is exploitation cinema filtered through Wood’s singularly earnest weirdness.

Overview

Police Lieutenant Matt Carson and Sergeant Randy Stone find themselves at the center of a disturbing case after discovering the body of a young woman in her underwear in a city park. The murder bears striking similarities to other recent crimes, leading them to suspect a connection to the local 'smut picture racket' operating in Hollywood’s shadows. Meanwhile, behind the scenes of the pornographic film industry, director Jaffe and his boss Gloria Henderson scramble to protect their illicit inventory from both police raids and internal betrayal. As the investigation tightens, the seamier side of Los Angeles is exposed, pitting law enforcement against a web of exploitation, naivete, and mounting violence.
