The Curse is a 1987 Italian-American horror and science fiction film directed by David Keith about a farm boy whose family and land are ravaged after a meteorite contaminates their water supply.

Programmer's Pick

Lovecraft goes down-home in this wild blend of farm life and cosmic contamination. If you’ve ever suspected your produce might be out to get you—or your stepfather might be crazier than the chickens—you’re in for a treat. Wil Wheaton versus meteorite-induced madness: not your average 4-H project.

Overview

Set against the backdrop of rural Tennessee, The Curse follows teenage Zack and his fractured family as their isolated farmhouse becomes ground zero for a cosmic catastrophe. After a meteorite crashes onto their property, oozing a strange and noxious liquid, subtle yet disturbing changes begin to infect the land and those living on it. Contaminated water and spoiled crops soon lead to paranoia, aggression, and mounting dread within the Crane household. With a stern, religious stepfather and a community eager to suppress the truth, Zack must navigate a domestic nightmare that blurs the line between environmental disaster and supernatural terror. This is a tale of rural horror where body and mind alike become casualties of a creeping, otherworldly menace.

Why This Matters

This adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's 'The Colour Out of Space' marked David Keith's directorial debut and featured uncredited direction by Italian horror veteran Lucio Fulci. Its U.S. distributor later branded unrelated Italian horror films as sequels, creating a loose 'Curse' series.
