Programmer's Pick

Donald Pleasence trades his trench coat for a dictator’s uniform in this taut, sun-baked noir, where the real danger isn’t just in the shadows but in the halls of power. Angélica María gives you a protagonist who refuses to stay a victim—even when the system is stacked. If you like your thrillers with a side of political menace, this one doesn’t flinch.

Overview

Cristina Carver thought she was simply visiting her husband, a TV reporter stationed in a volatile Latin American country under military rule. But after a car accident leaves her vulnerable, her life takes a dark turn when an apparently helpful colonel turns violent, forcing her to defend herself. In a desperate act of self-preservation, Cristina covers up the killing and tries to hide the evidence, even as a determined local detective starts to unravel the truth. Set against a backdrop of government censorship and mounting paranoia, the film explores how quickly the line between victim and suspect can blur when the authorities are as dangerous as the criminals.
