Quick Answer

What is Man's Favorite Sport? about?

Man's Favorite Sport? is a 1964 American comedy romance film directed by Howard Hawks about a fishing equipment salesman who, despite writing a best-selling guide, has never actually fished, leading to chaos when he is forced into a tournament.

Programmer's Pick

Howard Hawks reels in classic screwball energy, letting Rock Hudson flounder hilariously as a supposed fishing expert who can’t tell a rod from a raincoat. Paula Prentiss and Maria Perschy keep the chaos afloat, proving love—and slapstick—are the biggest catches at Lake Wakapoogee.

Overview

Roger Willoughby is the star salesman at Abercrombie & Fitch, celebrated for his expertise in recreational fishing gear—despite never having fished himself. When his boss, prompted by lodge owner’s daughter Easy Mueller and her friend Abigail Page, insists Roger enter the prestigious Lake Wakapoogee fishing tournament, Roger's hidden inexperience threatens to unravel his reputation. As the tournament approaches, the pressure mounts and Roger stumbles through a crash course in fishing, courtesy of the spirited Abigail. Packed with slapstick mishaps and romantic tension, Man’s Favorite Sport? playfully upends the idea of expertise, setting the stage for a neo screwball comedy where the lure of love may be stronger than the one on the end of Roger’s fishing line.
