1974 · 1h 27m · R · Action / Crime / Drama · IMDB TMDB

A young, shapely woman inherits her uncle's bordello when he dies. Soon realizing that she does not like running a house of prostitution, she decides to turn the business into a place that provides legitimate massages, but then runs into trouble with the mob.

Quick Answer

What is The Manhandlers about?

The Manhandlers is a 1974 American action, crime, and drama film directed by Lee Madden about a young woman who inherits a massage parlor and tries to run it legitimately, only to face pressure from local gangsters.

Programmer's Pick

Only in 1974 could a massage parlor inheritance spiral into a quasi-feminist, mob-entangled caper featuring commercial-burned actresses and secretaries dodging gropers. The Manhandlers tries to trade titillation for a veneer of legitimacy, but never quite escapes its exploitation roots.

Overview

After her uncle's murder by gangsters, Katie (Cara Burgess) inherits his massage parlor and is startled to find it operating as a thinly veiled brothel. Dismissing the staff, Katie enlists two friends—an actress fed up with commercial gigs and a secretary weary of workplace harassment—to relaunch the business, this time offering only legitimate massages. Her attempt to clean up the operation quickly draws the ire of local mobsters, who want a cut of her earnings. As Katie navigates threats from organized crime and unexpected romantic entanglements, The Manhandlers delivers a blend of exploitation, crime, and a dash of awkward empowerment, all set against the seedy backdrop of 1970s urban vice.
