Quick Answer

What is Gator Bait about?

Gator Bait is a 1973 American action-adventure thriller directed by Beverly Sebastian and Ferd Sebastian about a Cajun poacher named Desiree Thibodeau who is hunted by local men after being falsely accused of murder, leading her to seek revenge.

Programmer's Pick

Gator Bait is hixploitation with teeth—literally and figuratively. Claudia Jennings owns the screen as a swamp-savvy survivor who flips the script on her would-be attackers, making the bayou as dangerous for intruders as it is for gators. Come for the Cajun grit, stay for the inventive booby traps and unapologetic attitude.

Overview

In the swamps of the American South, Desiree Thibodeau, a barefoot Cajun poacher, makes a living trapping alligators. When two local men, Ben Bracken and Deputy Billy Boy, attempt to catch her—hoping to assault her—Desiree manages to outwit them. During the ensuing chase, an accident leaves Ben shot, and Billy Boy places the blame on Desiree, telling his father, the sheriff, that she is responsible. This accusation sends the sheriff, his son, and a posse after Desiree, escalating the conflict into a tense manhunt. As the pursuers threaten her family and home, Desiree is pushed to reclaim control and take revenge. The film blends rural action with exploitation elements, set amidst treacherous swamps and a community quick to violence.
