Programmer's Pick

Linda Blair trades the exorcist’s crucifix for poetry and Stockholm Syndrome, while Martin Sheen channels his inner romantic recluse. Sweet Hostage is a rural captivity tale that blurs the line between menace and heartfelt connection, all set to a rhythm of poetry readings and adolescent rebellion.

Overview

In Sweet Hostage, Doris Mae is a disillusioned and impoverished high school dropout burdened with the back-breaking chores of her family's rural dirt farm. When her truck breaks down during a routine errand, she accepts a ride from Leonard, an escaped psychiatric patient. Rather than returning her home, Leonard takes Doris Mae to his isolated cabin, claiming her as his companion and giving her a new name. As they remain secluded in the mountain hideout, Leonard weaves poetry and fanciful tales, his demeanor shifting unpredictably between courtly and volatile, especially in response to Doris Mae's rebelliousness. The film explores the uneasy dynamics between captor and captive in a secluded, pressure-cooker setting.
