Quick Answer

What is Sweet Sixteen about?

Sweet Sixteen is a 1983 American crime-horror-mystery-thriller directed by Jim Sotos about a teenage girl whose arrival in a small town is shadowed by a string of murders.

Programmer's Pick

Small-town prejudice, a high body count, and a slasher angle wrapped in a whodunit—Sweet Sixteen doesn't skimp on the genre essentials. Native American tensions and a birthday girl at the center of suspicion give this one a sharper edge than your average '80s splatter flick.

Overview

Sweet Sixteen sets its stage in a Texas town where tensions run high and newcomers aren't always welcomed. The film follows 15-year-old Melissa Morgan, who has just moved into the community with her archaeologist father and mother. On her first night, Melissa finds herself lost and is warned by Jason Longshadow, a Native American local, to avoid trouble. Melissa's interactions with the town's teenage boys quickly become ominous, as each encounter is followed by the boy's grisly murder. Against a background of racial prejudice, suspicion, and small-town secrets, a sense of dread grows as the sheriff investigates. With an unseen killer lurking, trust is in short supply, and every new friendship could be fatal.
